Holiday essentials

As we near summer here in Australia, travel season is also upon us. Choosing outfits and accessories is a key part of preparing for a trip (and one of the best ways to get you into that holiday mood). It does, however, entail some planning and creativity, especially when you’re restricted by your luggage space! You've probably heard of a capsule wardrobe, but we also love the idea of capsule jewellery essentials when you’ll be living out of a suitcase. These are versatile pieces that you can wear repeatedly and in different combinations. With some thoughtful curation of your luggage contents, your jewellery can help create a variety of looks to wear on holiday. We’ve collated our top tips for a seamless packing experience.

Brainstorm - Start by thinking about what your holiday location entails – i.e. climate, events and activities. This will help plan your outfits, which forms the base for your accessories. Taking note of elements such as colour tones and clothing necklines will help determine the jewellery pieces that will work best while you’re away.

"Jewellery is like the perfect spice - it always complements what's already there."  Diane Von Furstenberg

Selections - Once you have an idea of the outfits you’ll be packing, you can start choosing complementary jewellery. Select pieces that suit the majority of your outfits and which can be worn at any time of day. We like taking a few pairs of earring studs and some longer earring styles to mix up the looks depending on the occasion. A small selection of necklaces and chains gives you multiple options, as they can be layered in different combinations or worn alone. If you're stuck for ideas, our Travel Edit features versatile pieces that suit different occasions and are the perfect travel capsule essentials.

Visualise - Envisage your outfits and identify the jewellery options that work with these. Even having one piece in mind will make it easier to pull together a complete look when getting ready. We love jewellery that carries you easily from day to night or across different occasions, for when you’re changing outfits throughout the day. For example, layering a few necklaces works elegantly with both open necklines and casual crew neck t-shirts. You can mix and match styles on different days, such as by choosing different combinations of earrings to rotate if you have more than one piercing.

Storage - Ensure all jewellery pieces are separated in your luggage, so they stay organised and don’t get tangled during transit. A jewellery roll or soft lined pouches will keep everything safe and secure, or small plastic zip lock bags are useful for removing still air. Consider insuring any high value items or checking if your travel insurance covers them. And lastly, don't forget to store them in a hotel safe when not in use.
